Elounda Main Beach

Located right in the heart of the village, this expansive, sandy beach is fully organized with sunbeds and umbrellas. The water is incredibly shallow and warm, making it the safest and easiest option for families with young children.
Practical Tip: Parking is available at the municipal lot just behind the beach. Cafes and tavernas are just steps away, so you don’t need to pack lunch.
Plaka Beach
The Vibe: The Crystal Pebbles.
A short drive (or “Little Train” ride) from Elounda brings you to Plaka. Famous for its pristine white pebbles and absolute crystal-clear waters, this beach offers an unbeatable, direct view of Spinalonga island while you swim.
Practical Tip: Bring water shoes! The pebbles are beautiful but can be tough on sensitive feet. Trees line the back of the beach offering natural shade if you prefer to skip the umbrella rental.
Kolokytha Beach
The Vibe: The Turquoise Peninsula.
Tucked away on the wild Kalydon peninsula, this is one of the most famous coves in the region. The water color here is a striking, vivid turquoise set against a backdrop of ancient olive trees and rugged rocks.
Practical Tip: You must drive past the old stone windmills and navigate a bumpy dirt road to get here. It gets very busy by midday with boat tours, so arrive before 9:00 AM to claim your spot on the sand!
Hiona Beach
The Vibe: The Sandy Retreat.
While much of the Mirabello Bay coastline is rocky, this isolated pocket of pure golden sand and small pebbles is a local favorite. It offers a peaceful, sheltered spot for a quiet morning swim before the afternoon breeze kicks in.
Practical Tip: This is a fantastic spot to escape the mid-summer resort crowds. Bring a good book and a cold coffee.
Paradeisos Beach
The Vibe: The Best of Both Worlds.
Living up to its name (“Paradise”), this stunning stretch of coastline offers a unique mix of soft sand and smooth pebbles. It sits far enough away from the main harbor to maintain a tranquil, natural atmosphere.
Practical Tip: Bring your snorkels with you. This beach is ideal for snorkeling. A great option if your group is split between wanting a sandy seabed and the crystal-clear visibility that pebble beaches offer.
