Authentic Cretan Glenti: Celebrating Afenti Hristou in Pano Elounda
Step away from the coastal resorts and head up into the hills for one of the most highly anticipated local nights of the year!
The traditional stone village of Pano Elounda (Upper Elounda) is hosting a massive open-air glenti (traditional feast and party) to celebrate the Feast of Afenti Hristou (Christ the Savior). The village square will be completely transformed with long communal tables, incredible local food, flowing wine, and live traditional Cretan music.

The Cultural Significance: The feast of Afenti Hristou is a deeply rooted religious and cultural celebration in Crete. After the evening church service, the entire community gathers in the square to eat, drink, and dance traditional dances like the pentozali well into the early hours of the morning. It is a brilliant display of Cretan hospitality and community spirit.
Insider Tip: Parking in the narrow streets of Pano Elounda can get very tight during village festivals! Consider taking a taxi up from the main harbor, or park on the lower outskirts of the village and walk up. Make sure to arrive early to secure a good seat at one of the tables, and come hungry—there will be plenty of traditional souvlaki and local delicacies roasting on the grills!
