The Municipal Committee has decided to award the cleaning project of Spinalonga for this year to a private individual, with a direct award for 35,000 euros. The duration of the project will be 6.5 months, until November 15, when the flow of visitors to the island stops. The cost will be covered by the Ministry of Culture, within the framework of the program agreement with the Municipality and the Region of Crete.
The Municipality’s Cleaning Service is unable to offer the above work since it requires the work of at least 2 workers on the island, daily, during the summer season. The work will include the collection of all waste from the archaeological site of the islet, lawn mowing within the settlement, street sweeping, cleaning and beautification of places of interest as well as the transport of waste to the port of Plaka from where the Municipality’s waste trucks will pick it up. The scope of the contract also includes the transport of the personnel who will be employed in the aforementioned work to the island as well as the consumables for cleaning (brooms, bags, detergents, etc.).
