The must do activities in Elounda

From historic trips to family hikes and watersport thrills, these are the must-do activities in Elounda.

The Spinalonga Tour

The Must-Do History Trip

A trip to Elounda isn’t complete without visiting the Venetian fortress of Spinalonga. Known globally as the setting of Victoria Hislop’s The Island, this former leper colony holds a powerful, moving history. Take a traditional wooden boat from Elounda harbor for a breezy 20-minute crossing.

Pro Tip: Go early (around 9:00 AM) to beat the large excursion buses from Heraklion. Hire a private guide at the entrance to truly bring the stone streets and ruins to life.

Watersports & Adrenaline

High-Energy Fun

Located right off the main sandy beaches, Elounda’s watersports centers offer everything from peaceful paddleboarding to high-speed jet ski safaris. Whether you want to fly across the wake on a “Ring” or learn to waterski in the calm, protected bay, there is something for every age group.

Pro Tip: Great for Teens! If you have kids who are hard to please, the inflatable “Big Mable” rides are a guaranteed win.

The Kolokytha Family Hike

Nature & Ancient Ruins

For the best views of the Mirabello Bay, take the family on a stroll across the stone bridge to the Kalydon Peninsula. This relatively flat, easy trail leads you past ancient salt pans, through old olive groves, and down to the crystal-clear waters of Kolokytha beach.

Pro Tip: Look for the small Byzantine church of Agios Loukas along the way. It’s the perfect spot for a family photo with the blue sea as your backdrop.

Private Boat Rentals

Be your own captain. You can rent a small motorboat (15hp-30hp) without a license. It is the only way to find your own completely private cove for a swim.

Scuba & Snorkeling

Explore the Sunken City of Olous. Use a mask to see the ancient walls beneath the surface or dive deeper with a local PADI center to discover the volcanic reefs of the bay.

Friday Public Market

Experience local life. Every Friday morning, the harbor hosts the "Laiki" market. It’s the best place to buy local honey, mountain herbs, and fresh Cretan fruit.

The Salt Pans Sunset

A photographer's dream. Walk past the old stone windmills at dusk. The shallow waters of the ancient salt pans create a perfect mirror for the sunset colors.
